JAKARTA - Jessica Wongso, once at the center of Indonesia’s most infamous iced coffee case, has traded courtrooms for coffee beans. Her new café, Espresswongso, promises a bold Vietnamese brew “so good it could kill”—purely metaphorical, of course. The tagline? 100% Safe and Halal Ice Coffee - Guaranteed Cyanide-Free

With minimalist decor and baristas trained to never leave drinks unattended, Espressongso has drawn curious crowds and media attention once again. “We don't want to just serve coffee, but to also serve trust, one cup at a time,” Jessica quipped in a recent media interview, adding, “this is about second chances... and second shots of espresso.”

“We don't want to just serve coffee, but to also serve trust, one cup at a time,”

Interestingly, Jessica Wongso isn’t the only former courtroom celebrity to pivot into caffeine. Past high-profile names like Bali ex-terror suspect Umar Patek have also found a surprising second chance behind the espresso machine. Some see it as rehabilitation; others call it Indonesia’s most interesting franchise trend.

Other courtroom celebrities, specifically corruption suspects also seem to be joining the fray: Johnny G. Plate recently opened Johnny Plate of Donuts with Coffee, and Setya Novanto launched his new coffee shop Kafe e-KTP ("Kopi Tersangka Permanen" or Permanent Suspect Coffee).
